Implementing a hyper-converged infrastructure

The client

The City of Whitehorse is a local government area in Victoria, Australia in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. It has an estimated residential population of 172,000+.

Whitehorse City Council (WCC) approached Cloud Solutions Group (CSG) to evaluate their infrastructure portfolio and identify opportunities to optimise their primary and secondary infrastructure. The legacy infrastructure had reached end-of-life, and the council wanted to ensure their technology would meet increasing demand for technology resources over the next 5 years.

CSG proposed a VSAN hyper-converged infrastructure that integrated storage and computing into a single system. The new private cloud solution provided WCC with a secure, high-performing, and agile ICT environment capable of scaling with their business needs. To ensure business continuity, a resilient architecture with robust disaster recovery capabilities was established, automating failover and failback of services.

CSG migrated the workloads from the legacy infrastructure to the new system, minimising disruptions during the transition. The implementation included a scripted Disaster Recovery (DR) process, to ensure more reliable recovery through automated and pre-tested steps.

Performance improvements

The council has improved their DR time significantly compared to their previous system. They can now achieve a 15-minute replication frequency, meeting their Recovery Point Objective (RPO). They also met their Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and can complete a full site recovery within one hour.

The new infrastructure enhances reliability and availability, while also reducing the physical footprint and improving environmental and cost efficiency. WCC now has the capacity to support the council’s growth over the next five years.

The Empyrean team were always responsive. They were always on the phone, helping us through. And they’re not very restrictive about the scope – we asked for some additional testing and that was all accommodated. We appreciate it when there's a little bit of change to the scope and we don't have to go back and redo our contract. So things like that help us.
